چکیده

Zonal flows, by which we mean azimuthally symmetric band-like shear flows, are ubiquitous phenomena in nature and the laboratory. It is now widely recognized that zonal flows are a key constituent in virtually all cases and regimes of drift wave turbulence, indeed, so much so that this classic problem is now frequently referred to as "drift wave-zonal flow turbulence." In this theory overview, we present new viewpoints and unifying concepts which facilitate understanding of zonal flow physics, via theory, computation and their confrontation with the results of laboratory experiment. Special emphasis is placed on identifying avenues for further progress.

OV / 4 - 5 1 Overview of Experimental Results on the HL - 2 A Tokamak

The physics experiments on the HL-2A tokamak have been focused on confinement improvement, particle and thermal transport, zonal flow and turbulence, filament characteristics, energetic particle induced modes, and plasma fueling efficiency since 2008. ELMy H-mode discharges are achieved using combination of NBI heating with ECRH. The power threshold is found to increase with decrease of density...

On relaxation and transport in gyrokinetic drift wave turbulence with zonal flow

We present a theory for relaxation and transport in phase space for gyrokinetic drift wave turbulence with zonal flow. The interaction between phase space eddys and zonal flows is considered in two different limits, namely for K ! 1 and K ^ 1 where K is the Kubo number. For K ! 1, the growth of an isolated coherent phase space structure is calculated, including the associated zonal flow dynamic...

Multi-scale Nonlinear Turbulence Dynamics Studies

Critical gradient transport dynamics, breaking of gyro-Bohm transport scaling, transport bifurcation, and transport barrier formation all have a profound effect on confinement in magnetic fusion devices, and are thought to be both generated and regulated by the nonlinear interaction between gradient-driven small scaled ( k!"s <1) drift turbulence and larger meso-scaled structures such as zonal ...

Zonal flows, GAM, and radial electric field in the H-1 heliac

The ubiquity of zonal flows in toroidal plasma is now well recognized (see [1] for review on zonal flow theory and a special March issue of Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion 87 (2006) for the latest experimental papers). Two main branches of zonal flows have been identified. Both have zero poloidal and toroidal mode numbers, m = n = 0. One of them is a zero-frequency, finitebandwidth...

OV / 4 - 3 1 1 Overview of Experimental Results on HL - 2 A

Significant experimental advances have been made on HL-2A tokamak along with substantial improvement and development of hardware. The three dimensional spectral structures of the low frequency zonal flow, the geodesic acoustic mode (GAM), and quasi-mode-like low frequency fluctuations have been observed simultaneously for the first time. In addition, the spectral structure of the density fluctu...
